The Guide

What Is Reiki Healing?

Reiki is a gentle Japanese energy-healing practice that helps restore balance, calm the nervous system, and support your body's natural ability to heal. This guide explains what Reiki is, where it comes from, and exactly what to expect from a session.

Reiki, in simple terms

The word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) combines two Japanese words: rei, meaning universal, and ki, meaning life-force energy — the same vital energy called chi in Chinese traditions or prana in yogic ones. During a Reiki session, a trained practitioner acts as a channel for this energy, placing their hands lightly on or just above the body to encourage relaxation and balance.

Reiki doesn't diagnose or treat specific conditions. Instead, it works holistically — easing stress so your own system can do what it does best: rest, repair, and restore.

A short history of Reiki

Modern Reiki was developed in the early 1920s by Mikao Usui, a Japanese teacher who described receiving the method after a period of meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama. His system, Usui Reiki Ryoho, was carried forward by students such as Chujiro Hayashi and later Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the West. Today Reiki is practiced worldwide and is offered in many hospitals and hospices as a complementary comfort therapy.

At Awaken Oneness, Marissa weaves together multiple lineages — Usui Tibetan, Medicine Wheel, Egyptian, and Kundalini Reiki — drawing on more than a decade of Master Teacher experience.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is based on the idea that life-force energy flows through and around us. When that energy is low or blocked — often by stress, grief, or exhaustion — we're more likely to feel tense, anxious, or unwell. A Reiki session helps that energy flow freely again.

Scientifically, much of Reiki's benefit is linked to the deep relaxation response it produces. By shifting the body out of "fight or flight" and into "rest and digest," Reiki can lower stress hormones, slow the heart rate, and create the calm conditions in which healing happens naturally.

What to expect in a session

  1. Before: You'll talk briefly with your practitioner about what brought you in and anything you'd like to focus on. You stay fully clothed throughout.
  2. During: You'll rest comfortably while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or above different areas of the body. Many people feel warmth, gentle tingling, or a floating, meditative calm. Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes.
  3. After: Most people feel relaxed, grounded, and lighter. It's a good idea to drink water and take a little time to integrate the experience.

Frequently asked questions

What is Reiki healing?

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on (or hands-near) energy healing practice that originated in Japan. A trained practitioner channels universal life-force energy to help balance your body's energy centers, release tension, and support your natural ability to heal on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Does Reiki really work?

Many people experience deep relaxation, reduced stress and anxiety, better sleep, and emotional release during and after a session. Reiki is a complementary practice — it supports your wellbeing alongside, not instead of, conventional medical care.

What does a Reiki session feel like?

Most people feel a warm, tingling, or floating sensation as the energy moves. Some drift into a meditative, dream-like state, while others simply feel calm and lighter. Every session is unique to you.

Do I have to believe in Reiki for it to work?

No. You don't need any particular belief or prior experience. All that's asked is an openness to relax and receive.
